The Moments that made Messi eternal and the records he built in the CONMEBOL Copa América™

To talk about Lionel Messi in the CONMEBOL Copa América™ is to tell a story of perseverance, records and glory. From his debut at Venezuela 2007 to winning back-to-back titles in the United States in 2024, the Argentine captain has written some of the most important chapters in the tournament's recent history.

On his birthday, we look back at the moments that defined his journey and the records that turned him into a CONMEBOL Copa América™ legend.

The Debut of a Star in 2007

Messi made his first CONMEBOL Copa América™ appearance at Venezuela 2007. At just 20 years old, he was part of a star-studded Argentina squad and produced one of the tournament's most memorable moments: his brilliant chip against Mexico in the semifinals.

Argentina reached the final, and Messi began to show that he was destined to leave a lasting mark on the competition.

The Moments That Strengthened the Legend

Following his appearances in 2011, 2015 and the Copa América Centenario in 2016, Messi experienced some of the most difficult moments of his international career.

The finals of 2015 and 2016 marked a period of enormous pressure for the Argentine captain, who continued pursuing his dream of winning a title with the Albiceleste.

The Maracanã and the 2021 Triumph

On July 10, 2021, one of the greatest moments in Argentine football history arrived. Argentina defeated Brazil 1-0 at the Maracanã Stadium to win the CONMEBOL Copa América™ for the first time since 1993. Messi was named the tournament's Best Player and finished as its top assist provider, leading a generation that ended Argentina's 28-year wait for a major title.

Back-to-Back Champions in the United States in 2024

Three years later, Argentina lifted the trophy once again. The Albiceleste defeated Colombia in the final in Miami to secure a second consecutive continental title, cementing one of the most successful eras in the nation's football history.

Although an injury forced Messi to leave the field during the final, the captain was once again at the heart of a campaign that ended with another trophy celebration.

Messi's Records in the CONMEBOL Copa América™

Throughout his career in the tournament, Messi has established historic milestones:

  • Two-time CONMEBOL Copa América™ champion (2021 and 2024)
  • Player with the most appearances in the history of the tournament
  • All-time leading assist provider in the competition
  • One of Argentina's all-time leading scorers in the CONMEBOL Copa América™
  • Participant in seven editions of the tournament
  • A Birthday While Chasing New Records

Lionel Messi celebrates another birthday while once again starring at a FIFA World Cup.

At United States, Mexico and Canada 2026, the Argentine captain continues to expand a legacy that once seemed impossible to surpass. Following his performances against Algeria and Austria, he reached new historic milestones, becoming the player with the most appearances, the most victories and the most minutes played in FIFA World Cup history.

His performances have also continued to add unique achievements. He scored a historic hat-trick in Argentina's opening match against Algeria and, a few days later, played another decisive role against Austria to help the Albiceleste move closer to qualification for the Round of 32.

At 39 years of age, Messi continues to lead Argentina in the defense of the title won at Qatar 2022, proving that his story with the Albiceleste is still being written.

A Story That Keeps Growing

From the young player who dazzled South America at Venezuela 2007 to the captain who lifted two CONMEBOL Copa América™ trophies with Argentina, Lionel Messi has built a unique relationship with the tournament.

But his legacy is far from complete. While continuing to compete at the FIFA World Cup 2026 and breaking historic records, the Rosario-born star keeps adding new chapters to a career that already stands among the greatest in football history.

The CONMEBOL Copa América™ was the stage where he conquered South America and lifted two trophies with the Albiceleste. The FIFA World Cup 2026 now finds him once again on football's biggest stage, proving that Lionel Messi's story still has more pages to be written.
