United States, December 7, 2024. The South American Football Confederation announces that the CONMEBOL Copa América™ trophy has been restored and looks refreshed for the 48th edition of the world's oldest national team tournament.
More than 100 years after the first edition of the CONMEBOL Copa América™, which took place in 1916 in Buenos Aires, the continent's oldest national team trophy has been brought back to its roots.
Over the years, the trophy has been modified by adding wooden components to accommodate the trophy's winners' badges. The original CONMEBOL Copa América trophy was made by Casa Escasany to be awarded at the 1917 South American Championship, later renamed the Copa América. In 1979, a wooden base was added so that a second row of champions' badges could be added, while in 1995, a third step was added. Since 2004, different replicas of the trophy have been awarded.
“Since I took over the presidency of CONMEBOL, one of the goals I set was to preserve and enhance the roots of South American football. This year we are restoring this iconic trophy, which weighs more than 11.85 kilograms and has been part of some of our region's greatest sporting feats. We are convinced that this new edition of the CONMEBOL Copa América™ will bring joy and unique and exciting moments for our spectators and we will continue to write the legend of the oldest and most emotive national team tournament in the world,” concluded Alejandro Domínguez, President of CONMEBOL.
A documentary on the history of this restoration will soon be unveiled on CONMEBOL's various digital platforms.
The 48th edition of the Copa América™ will be held next year in the United States, a new quest for continental glory. This time, the 10 CONMEBOL member teams and six CONCACAF guests will compete to put their name on the restored jewel.
